12 Best Snowboarding Spots in Winnipeg for Perfect Powder Days

Sure, skiing is fun, but for me, nothing beats being on a snowboard, carving through fresh powder, and hitting jumps. And the feeling of catching that perfect edge? Priceless.

That’s why it’s a good thing there are plenty of snowboarding spots in and around Winnipeg. In fact, Manitoba has produced some of the top snowboarders in the globe such as pro boarders Andrew Geeves and Derek Molinski.

So, if you’re addicted to the sound of your board slicing through the snow, here are the best places to snowboard in the Winnipeg area!

Just 15 minutes from downtown Winnipeg lies Springhill Winter Sports Park, a spot that’s perfect for riders of all levels. It stands at 150 vertical feet and has four lifts—plus, it’s capable of 100% snowmaking and is groomed daily.

Fun fact: Its terrain park is said to be the best in Manitoba! You can practice hitting jumps and rails, or you could simply go down the course or cruise the open areas.

And if you’re just beginning or looking to hone your skills, they offer professional lessons for all ages, as well as ski and snowboard rentals.

Just a heads up—they have a strict riders-only policy on the hill, meaning skiers or snowboarders only. If you’re just there to watch, you should stick to the indoor areas, deck, or parking lot.

Pro Tip:

Want to save some cash during a midweek shred session? Then, we recommend taking advantage of Thrifty Tuesday, where all lift passes are only $19 for the evening!

Known as Manitoba’s snowboarding capital, Stony Mountain Ski Area is located only 11 km north of the Perimeter Highway, making it super accessible.

The hill might not be huge, but it’s a fave among Winnipeg snowboarders because of its shorter lift lines, which translates to more time on the slopes. Plus, it contains half-dozen runs, night riding, and even a half-pipe—great for practicing tricks.

Snowboarding lessons are available here, and coupled with their beginner-friendly slopes, this spot is (literally) a cool place to learn and ride.

In addition to snowboarding, you could do all-alpine and cross-country skiing as well.

Pro Tip:

If you’re new to the slopes, we suggest checking out their Discover Snowboarding discount packages. Most include a snowboarding lesson, a beginner lift ticket, and equipment and gear rental.

Holiday Mountain—Manitoba’s first official ski resort—is located just over an hour south of Winnipeg. Although it has some beginner-friendly runs, it’s actually one of the most popular spots for intermediate and pro riders.

The resort boasts 11 downhill runs and a freestyle terrain park. For pros, they offer a 300-feet vertical drop, so you’d be getting your thrills while practicing moves.

What we love about this place is its ski-in, ski-out accommodations. You don’t need to rush home after a long day of shredding since you’re staying onsite—you could be enjoying a hot cup of cocoa in mere minutes!

If you’re serious about riding, consider grabbing a Holiday Mountain season pass. It starts at $37 to $57 for lift tickets, and only $34 for night skiing/snowboarding—definitely a good option rather than paying for each ride separately.

Pro Tip:

We recommend arriving at least 60 minutes early for your snowboarding lesson. That way, you’ll have plenty of time to check the weather conditions, set up, go over some ground rules, and hit the slopes stress-free!

Asessippi Ski Resort, northwest of Winnipeg, has the largest ski and snowboarding areas in the Prairies. It’s a family-friendly place, and if you’re with non-snowboarders, they can also enjoy snow tubing, snow biking, and Nordic skiing.

The area offers 26 downhill runs, three lifts, and two terrain parks—this is cool since most offer only one terrain park.

First-timers and young snowboarders can start on their dedicated bunny hill, under the watchful eye of their certified instructors. On the other hand, more experienced riders typically tackle the longer runs and the terrain parks.

Feeling famished after an action-packed day on the powder? Why not pop over to Asessippi Food Court and grab a couple of their yummy pizzas, pasta, or burgers—because you deserve it!

Pro Tip:

First-timers can learn at Asessippi Ski Resort’s Snow School. Instructors will not only teach you the basics, but they’ll also help you find the best runs!

Experienced snowboarders should ditch the crowded ski and snowboarding resorts and organize a backcountry snowboarding trip near Winnipeg instead.

Let’s face it, snowboarding pros are always yearning for untouched powder and steep terrain, as well as challenging tree runs. Add to these amazingly stunning Canadian landscapes, and you’re in for a memorable riding trip with your buddies!

One of the closest backcountry gems is Algoma Highlands in Ontario—King Mountain’s north side—which offers perfectly spaced hardwood trees and plenty of snow. This area is perfect for experts who love weaving through natural terrain.

Another backcountry paradise is Banff National Park. Trans-Canada Highway and Icefields Parkway offer roadside access to a variety of slopes, where you can do quick laps or multi-day excursions.

Pro Tip:

Backcountry terrain is unpredictable, so always go with a guide and make sure to bring avalanche safety gear (beacon, probe, and shovel) for a safe adventure.

Falcon Ridge Ski Slope

Hours: Sat – Sun: 10:30 AM – 4:30 PM

Tucked in the shores of Falcon Lake, Falcon Ridge Ski Slopes is a charming resort that offers prime snowboarding, skiing, tubing, and Nordic skiing areas.

Snowboarders would love its 12 alpine runs and spacious terrain park. The lifts include a T-bar, rope tows, and a handle tow, and impressively, the tube run has its own lift!

My favorite part is their adorable avalanche rescue dog, Mika. Sure, Manitoba is not known for avalanches, but this pup is always on patrol with his ski patrol team (mostly for cuddles not rescues!), so keep an eye out.

A reward after a powder carving day is lounging in their warm chalet. I recommend grabbing breakfast or lunch, playing a round of ping pong or crokinole, and enjoying some live music on select weekends.

Pro Tip:

If a single day isn’t enough (and TBH, it rarely is), there are lakefront cabins with private hot tubs that are available to rent.

Ski Valley is a laidback slope near Winnipeg, known for its top-notch staff who can arrange everything for you. This includes lift tickets, and ski, snowboard, and snow blade rentals.

With 1.6 km of slopes, this resort may be on the smaller side, but it still packs a lot of fun. It has 9 runs for beginners and advanced snowboarders, and it even has a Multi-Week Ski Program on Sundays—designed for kids aged 9 to 13.

Planning to ride all season long? Then, snag season passes that cost only $450 for adults and $430 for juniors.

What we always look forward to after spending a day on the slopes here is their amazing Ski Valley cheeseburgers and hearty chili. Trust me, they’re delicious!

Pro Tip:

If you visit Ski Valley with a school group, make sure to keep your School Pass Lift Ticket. Bring it back anytime within the season to enjoy a discounted Junior Lift Pass!

Just 22 km north of Thompson, you’ll find Mystery Mountain Winter Park, offering a mix of scenic runs and exciting terrain park features. In fact, this spot has 18 downhill ski runs, a half-pipe, and a variety of lifts, as well as 75% snowmaking on the runs.

Snowboarders would love the terrain park, carefully maintained by the local freestyle community. We love its kickers, boxes, and rails, and in between snowboarding sessions, we have a blast at the snow tubing area.

For those new to the sport, they have professional instructors who’ll help you find your footing (and confidence!). Snowboarding lessons cost $40 for 2 hours but keep in mind that they must be booked one weekend in advance.

The perfect way to end your day would be grabbing a hot chocolate in the Canteen, or kicking back with drinks and cocktails in the Polar Lounge (if you’re over 18, that is).

Pro Tip:

Save big with their early bird passes—high school students can grab one for $275 while adults pay $299. We noticed that this is comparatively more affordable than other resort passes.

Frost Fire Ski Area

Frost Fire Ski Area is only a few hours south of Winnipeg, even though it’s located in Walhalla, North Dakota. Nestled in Pembina Gorge, this resort is one of my favorites, offering some of the best riding in the region.

Snowboarding fiends of all levels can find their groove here, with its dozen long runs stretching up to 2,600 feet and 1,400 feet of elevation to boot. There’s also a terrain park so that you can practice your tricks.

For relative newcomers, there are PSIA-certified instructors for snowboarding lessons. A group lesson costs $45 per hour (per student), while a private one-on-one session costs $80 per student—there’s a maximum of three hours for both types.

And if you’re planning a long stay, invest wisely in your snowboarding trip and grab a season pass. It has options for adults, juniors, and kids, ranging from $299 to $499.

Pro Tip:

Howatt Hangar Bar & Grill is the perfect spot to refuel your powder runs. Grab burgers, fries, or pizzas, before heading out, or sip cocktails with friends after snowboarding.

Mount Evergreen in Kenora is only a couple of hours from Winnipeg. It’s perfect for a snowboarding getaway since it’s near shops, restaurants, and accommodations.

We recommend hitting the terrain park first to hit some jumps before the midday crowd joins in. Just don’t forget to wear a helmet, which is required in the park.

After, try out some (or all?) of the resort’s 13 runs, or just glide around with friends if you want to take it easy.

If you’re staying here for the long haul, why not sign up for a membership? It has a ton of inclusions like 50% off lift tickets and rentals, five buddy passes, free tubing, and discounted locker rentals.

Pro Tip:

Good news for snowboarding birthday celebrants—Mount Evergreen has birthday rental perks, which include 2 hours of tubing, rental space for 10 people, candy bags for guests, and a free tubing pass for future visits.

This epic snowboarding spot has 22 groomed downhill runs, two of which are three-quarters of a mile long. It also has a 450-foot vertical drop, which is pretty awesome for experts.

Aside from runs, powder heads can also enjoy the resort’s terrain park, which has a T-bar system. Before heading out, make sure to check weather updates first, since winter conditions can be quite unpredictable.

And if you’re feeling peckish, snag a hot meal at the Co-op Chalet, where you can swap stories with other riders, or just curl up with a cup of coffee while enjoying the view.

Pro Tip:

If you’re going here with your family for the winter, why not grab a Family Season pass? It costs only $800, and it covers two adults and two children!

One of my go-tos during winter whenever the powder bug bites me is Windsor Park Nordic Centre, located right in the heart of Winnipeg. This fun not-for-profit facility has been maintained by the Cross Country Ski Association of Manitoba, and it shows.

What we love here is its night skiing and snowboarding opportunities. They welcome riders of all levels to carve up their 15 km groomed trails for a small fee—100% of which goes toward keeping the trails in top-notch shape.

If you’re looking for a spot to warm up afterward, visit their rustic clubhouse, which has a fireplace, hot chocolate, and snack bar—heaven after a hard day’s run, right?

Also, keep an eye out for special events, races, and winter programs, which are held here from time to time. Who knows, you might even win a prize!

Pro Tip:

Want to sharpen your snowboarding skills? We suggest signing up for their onsite Ski School, where their certified CANSI instructors can help you learn the basics or work on advanced techniques.
