Must-Order: Abir Al Sham

Chaeban Ice Cream is Winnipeg’s first super-premium, made-from-scratch hard ice cream spot. It was created by a second-generation dairy scientist, so you know every pint and cone is made with care.

One of their absolute must-tries is Abir Al Sham, a traditional Syrian recipe that’s unlike anything you’ve had before. It has rose and orange blossom water, perfectly balanced with toasted pistachios, cashews, ricotta cheese, and orchid root powder.

For dairy-free goodness, they have an impressive lineup of plant-based flavors like Glen Coconut, Sherry Chocolate, and La Vida Lemon, just to name a few.

They even have an eco-friendly jar program—if you buy pints, you can return your cleaned jars to the shop for a $1 refund. They sanitize each one before reuse, too.

Pro Tip:

If you want to wow a crowd, book the Chaeban Ice Cream Cart for your next big event, like a wedding, birthday, corporate gatherings, etc. Packages start at $950 and include full service, plus six of their premium flavors.

Must-Order: Ferrero Rocher

Since 2019, Dug & Betty’s Ice Creamery has been winning over Winnipeg locals. Located in the heart of Saint-Boniface, this Parisian-inspired, 30-seat shop was established by Chef Fern Kirouac.

His spot is known for small-batch, gourmet ice cream. Popular flavors include Strawberry Honey Balsamic Pepper, Sour Cherry with Dark Chocolate, and Ube.

My personal pick? Their Ferrero Rocher—it’s rich, chocolatey, and nutty. You can enjoy your scoops however you like: served in a simple cup, a regular cone, a gluten-free sugar cone, or a waffle cone.

Unlike other shops that serve only ice cream, they also offer spirits, including champagne and beer floats, along with a curated list of fine wines.

Pro Tip:

Dug & Betty’s is totally dog-friendly. In fact, the staff happily hand out free puppy cones. Yep, your cute pup gets their own little ice cream cone with a treat tucked in!

Must-Order: Pumpkin Pie Soft Ice Cream

Dairy Delight has been a go-to in Winnipeg for over 20 years. While it’s best known as a Greek-style burger joint, the ice cream here is just as legendary.

Their countertop freezer has over 28 flavors of hard ice cream, plus a lineup of sundaes, shakes, and soft serve that keep people coming back summer after summer.

If I have to choose one, the Pumpkin Pie Soft Ice Cream is my ride-or-die—it’s creamy, spiced just right, and feels like fall in a cone. Other unique flavors include Lime, Neon Blast, Toasted Coconut, and more.

One thing to consider before your visit—they don’t accept credit cards. Bring cash or a debit card, but note that there may be a small fee for debit transactions.

Pro Tip:

On sunny days, snag a spot on Dairy Delight’s cute open wooden patio. It’s the perfect place to share a banana split and burgers with friends!

Must-Order: Pistachio Almond

Licks Ice Cream Patio has been a River Park South staple for 25 years. This family-owned spot sits right at the corner of Britannica and St. Mary’s Rd, welcoming everyone, from neighborhood locals to folks driving in across Winnipeg.

They have a lineup of artisan homemade flavors crafted by local ice cream makers. And they have lots of delicious vegan and lactose-free options.

My personal fave is the Pistachio Almond, which is nutty and creamy in the best way possible. You’ll also find other crowd pleasers like Maple Walnut, Cherry Cookie Dough, Rum Raisin, and Black Licorice.

If you’re planning to visit on a hot summer day, be prepared for a bit of a wait, especially during peak hours. But trust me—it’s worth it.

Pro Tip:

The patio at Licks is enormous, and it’s been known to host live concerts. Check out their socials if you want to vibe to good music while enjoying yummy cones.

Must-Order: Blue Licorice Ice Cream

Sargent Sundae serves everything, from cones to ice cream floats, with both hard and soft ice cream on the menu. Open daily throughout spring, summer, and fall, it’s definitely a neighborhood family-favorite.

I just adore their Blue Licorice Ice Cream—it’s sweet, creamy, and eye-catching enough to make your Instagram pop.

If ice cream milkshakes are more your vibe, you’ll love their unique flavors like Rum & Butter, Pina Colada, Coconut, and Peanut Butter. Each one is thick and creamy—great for sipping while lounging in their courtyard!

Just note that this is a cash and debit-only place, so come prepared!

Pro Tip:

Sargent Sundae’s location is unbeatable—it’s right across Assiniboine Park by the footbridge! You can grab a cone, cross the bridge, and soak in the views; it doesn’t get more Winnipeg than that.

Must-Order: Peanut Butter Pie Parfait

Sub Zero Ice Cream has been a sweet staple in Winnipeg since 1988. This woman-owned shop, tucked into the Elmwood community, is run by Linh, who blends her background in biochemistry with her passion for creativity.

The magic starts with their creamy soft serve, made from 100% Canadian dairy. It’s the base for a menu full of classics such as soft serve cones, hard ice cream, sundaes, flurries, milkshakes, and traditional banana splits.

We also love their vegan soft serve series. Made with oats, they’re free of the 11 most common allergens, including lactose, gluten, soy, and nuts.

As for me, I can’t get enough of their Peanut Butter Pie Parfait, layered with peanut butter, cheesecake, and cinnamon crunch. This is so good that you’ll be planning your next visit before you even finish it!

Pro Tip:

If you don’t feel like leaving the house, Sub Zero works with DoorDash, Uber Eats, and SkipTheDishes, so you can get your ice cream fix delivered to your door.

Must-Order: Strawberry Rhubarb Crumble

Fête Ice Cream & Coffee is co-owned by Elisa and Teri-Lynn, who met while teaching at a local dance studio. They realized they shared a dream of opening an ice cream shop, and it came to life with the help of the University of Manitoba Dairy Science Program.

The shop offers premium, small-batch ice cream, with 16 house-made flavors to choose from. And if you want to balance the sweetness, they also serve quality coffee from Detour Coffee Roasters.

One of my faves here is their Strawberry Rhubarb Crumble, which is also gluten-free. You’ll get a superb mix of sweet strawberries and tangy rhubarb, all folded together with a buttery crumble texture.

If you’d like them for your next shindig, feel free to book their services. They can customize packages for office parties, weddings, or community events.

Pro Tip:

Fête is located right next to Bonnycastle Dog Park. You can bring your furry friend and enjoy a scoop while watching them run around with other adorable pups.

Must-Order: Chocolate Peanut Butter

Eva’s Gelato & Coffee Bar boasts that they serve the most authentic Argentinean gelato in the city, and we’re inclined to agree.

I’m absolutely hooked on their Chocolate Peanut Butter gelato. It has a rich chocolate base swirled together with ribbons of salty-sweet peanut butter.

You can also choose from their lineup of specialty flavors like Alaska Lemon, Chocotorta, Halvah, and Coconut Extreme. These are available for pre-order with just five days’ notice, in containers of 2 to 4 liters.

In addition to gelato, they have a drinks menu that includes a variety of teas and shakes. The true crowd favorite, however, is the Gelato Float—it has a shot of full-bodied espresso poured over a scoop of your favorite gelato.

Pro Tip:

For hardcore sweet tooth fans, I recommend signing up for Eva’s subscription service. Their online shop will ship you pints of gelato each month like clockwork.

Must-Order: Pumpkin Soft Serve

Locally owned and operated, Sweet Tops Ice Cream is a Henderson highway spot that has all the charm of a classic ice cream parlor. They’re known for their creamy soft serve, as well as hard ice cream, twisters, sundaes, and root beer floats.

We like how they seem to have everything Dairy Queen has to offer—but better. That’s because their ice cream cakes and sundaes are all made in-house.

Loyal customers rave about their Butter Pecan and Instagram-famous Blue Licorice, but my go-to order here is their Pumpkin Soft Serve. It’s silky, spiced just right, and tastes exactly like a slice of pumpkin pie.

Plus, their scoops are huge and sundaes are piled sky high, which means you’re really getting your money’s worth. It’s one of the few places where you can grab dessert for the whole fam without going over the budget.

Pro Tip:

Sweet Tops loves pups just as much as people! They serve up doggie bowls made just for your four-legged friends, so don’t be shy about bringing your fur baby along.

Must-Order: Peaches N’ Cream

Bridge Drive-In, lovingly called BDI by Winnipeggers, is practically a summer tradition. Sitting at the foot of the Elm Park Bridge, this spot has been serving up creamy soft-serve and shakes for over 60 years.

I highly recommend their Peaches N’Cream—a triple strawberry sundae loaded with peach slices, finished off with whipped cream and a cherry. You can even add nuts if you want that extra crunch.

Part of the charm of this shop is the setting itself. You can snag a seat at one of their shaded concrete tables or take your cone across the Elm Park Bridge and enjoy gorgeous views of the Red River.

Parking can be tricky on busy summer nights. But you can always park a little further away and enjoy the short walk.

Pro Tip:

For those who want to bring that BDI magic to their own celebration, book their GOOG mobile ice cream truck—it’s a guaranteed crowd pleaser!

Must-Order: Peanut Butter Bomb Sundae

9 Below is a family-owned neighborhood gem known for its hard and soft-serve ice cream, along with chicken fingers, burgers, and fries.

Their menu is stacked with all the good stuff, with crowd-pleasing flavors like Cinnamon Bun Sundae and Birthday Party Ice Cream. They also offer vegan, lactose-free, and sugar-free options so that everyone can get in on the fun!

Their Peanut Butter Bomb Sundae does it for me every single time. Imagine layers of ice cream, swirls of peanut butter, hot fudge, and a little whipped cream on top.

What’s cool is that you can build your own custom creation. You can mix soft-serve with hard ice cream, or pile toppings on until your cup can’t hold it anymore—all up to you!

Pro Tip:

You should enjoy one of 9 Below’s delicious cold treats, and maybe even a couple of burgers and fries, on their cute outdoor patio. Just note that the area fills up quickly during summer and spring.

Must-Order: Pistachio Gelato

Tucked in Little Italy on Corydon Avenue, Nucci’s Gelati is a classic Winnipeg spot that feels at home. For over 50 years, the Nucci family has been scooping up joy for ice cream-loving locals and tourists!

They’re particularly known for their handcrafted gelato, made fresh with traditional technique. With over 75 flavors to choose from, it proudly holds the crown for having the city’s biggest selection.

Personally, I can never resist their Pistachio Gelato—ultra-creamy, smooth, and tastes exactly the way authentic gelato should taste.

Aside from frozen treats, they also serve some of the best Italian comfort food in the Peg. Stuff like hearty lasagna, bowtie pasta, and homemade sausage would be perfect for lunch, along with their gelato offerings.

You can book Nucci’s Gelati mobile cart for festivals, parties, or special events. It comes loaded with gelato, sorbetto, milkshakes, drinks, and even popping boba!
