The 5 Best Animal Hospitals Winnipeg Pet Parents Can Trust

  • Medical Capabilities: We looked closely at the variety of treatments and specialized surgical procedures available at each location. It is important that a clinic can handle complex cases without always sending you to an outside specialist.
  • Team Longevity: We prioritized practices with experienced veterinarians and long-term support staff who offer consistent care. Seeing familiar faces during visits builds immense trust and helps pets feel much more relaxed.
  • Client Accessibility: We evaluated scheduling flexibility and how easy it is to access each physical location. Extended evening hours and convenient parking make a massive difference for busy pet parents.
  • Range of Care: We checked whether the hospitals treat a diverse group of animals beyond standard cats and dogs. Families with pocket pets or unique exotic companions need specialized medical attention too.

Finding the right vet for your pets can feel completely overwhelming. You want a team that genuinely cares about your pet and brings serious medical expertise to the table.

If you’re looking for trusted animal hospitals in Winnipeg, you need to make sure you choose a place that not only handles routine checkups and sudden late-night emergencies, but also gives you peace of mind.

We spent a lot of time researching local clinics to see which ones stand out for their medical care and support. Here’s a close look at those options to help keep your pets healthy.

1. Transcona Veterinary Hospital

transcona-veterinary-hospital

Website:https://www.transconaveterinaryhospital.ca/

Address: 501 Pandora Ave W,

Contact: 204-222-5251

Hours: Monday to Thursday: 8:00 AM – 7:00 PM,  Friday: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM; Saturday: 9:00 AM- 1:00 PM

Doesn’t it give you peace of mind knowing that there’s a clinic you can bring your pet to that has been in the community for about 40 years now?

Transcona Veterinary Hospital treats pets as central members of the family unit while performing advanced surgeries right at their own facility.

They handle procedures like fracture repairs and gastrointestinal (GI) scoping. They can also do tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO), which is an orthopedic knee surgery for dogs.

What we love most is they prioritize accessible pet education to empower owners with reliable information on tick and heartworm management. In short, you get comprehensive care that grows alongside your family over the years.

However, they don’t offer 24-hour emergency services, closing early on Fridays and remaining closed on Sundays.

Plus, their location deep in the northeastern suburb makes for a long cross-town commute if you live in the Southern areas.

Pros

  • Advanced surgeries performed on-site
  • Extended evening hours until late on weekdays
  • Available patient financing through Medicard
  • Dedicated parking lot with full accessibility

Cons

  • No overnight emergency operations
  • Long commute for South Winnipeg residents

Customer Reviews

TVH is 💯 the best!

Been going here for many years with many of my animals. 100% the best place to bring your babies and feel safe. They can get really busy at times but that comes with being a great place you can trust. I went to another hospital a year ago in a weekend panic and it was a huge mistake..never again. TVH is 💯 the best! 🐾 …

Truly the best vet clinic in Winnipeg! All the vets are wonderful, especially Dr. Nitychoruk, who takes such great care of our very anxious pup.

Their pricing is also very fair, and I’m grateful they get us in for last minute appointments as needed.

The doctors truly care about the animals at this clinic, and it shows.

Finding a local team that values independence while delivering incredibly diverse medical care is a massive win.

Grant Park Animal Hospital remains entirely locally owned. They bring over fifty years of combined experience to rare fields like canine sports medicine and specialized aquatic medicine.

When we chatted with a local pet parent last month, she could not stop raving about how flexible the hospital’s care options are. She said they saved her schedule through remote telemedicine appointments.

They also offer house calls for those needing home visits, though they’re not a fully dedicated mobile veterinary services

On top of that, they run seasonal outreach clinics to bring essential veterinary care to remote northern communities. This does mean that a portion of their resources periodically shifts away from the city, though.

It’s also worth keeping in mind that they’re not an all-night critical care hospital, so midnight emergencies require an outside facility.

Pros

  • Entirely independent and owner-operated
  • Rare aquatic and fish medicine services
  • Convenient home visits and telemedicine
  • Combined team experience of fifty years

Cons

  • No 24/7 all-night critical care
  • Resources shifted to northern community clinics

such a positive experience

Our first vet appointment at Grant Park Animal Hospital was such a positive experience! The scheduling was easy, phone reminders were a nice touch, the front staff were friendly, and Dr Mia was informative, gentle, and so kind. In fact, I thought Minnow would be scared of the carrier and to go to the vet like like previous cats but she keeps going back in and sitting in it since we got home which says a lot. ❤️

exceptional animal care

My dogs always receive superior care at Grant Park Animal Hospital, thanks to its unique operational structure. With veterinarians at the helm, decisions are guided by expertise rather than corporate interests and greed. Something that is hard to come by these days, a privately owned AND operated clinic. The staff maintains a professional yet relaxed atmosphere, making visits comfortable and welcoming. I highly recommend Grant Park Animal Hospital in Winnipeg for its commitment to exceptional animal care.

Customer Reviews

Reception and vets are amazing.

My dog have an heart disease, that unfortunately don’t have cure. The vet hasn’t push and gave options to me decide witch treatment was best according “Money and expectations”. And they really live what they do, you can tell, about the love that they show. Reception and vets are amazing.

such great customer service

I panicked as a loving cat mom and was so happy Anderson was able to see her in the same day.  They even called to ask if I wanted to move my appointment up as they had a cancellation.  Cheryl on the phone was so nice and was the one who called me back – such great customer service.  The tech was so nice but I missed her name.  Dr Green was very nice.  I appreciate that the clinic was very upfront about costs.

4. Machray Animal Hospital

Website:https://www.machrayvet.ca/

Address: 1039 McPhillips St

Contact: 204-586-9721

Hours: Monday to Friday: 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM; Saturday: 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Families keeping smaller, unique animals often face a real challenge in finding a vet equipped to care for them.

Machray Animal Hospital solves this by explicitly treating a wide variety of pocket pets, including ferrets and guinea pigs.

Operating with independent roots since 1983, this clinic offers a compassionate approach with built-in discounts for routine spay and neuter surgeries. They also partner with local rescue groups and offer perks like a free nail trim during dental procedures.

Plus, their full in-house diagnostic laboratory runs blood counts and chemistry profiles right on-site to minimize waiting times.

But a notable downside is that they don’t provide overnight or on-call services for after-hours emergencies.

Also, their regular schedule lacks extended evening hours, which makes booking standard checkups tricky if you work traditional daytime shifts.

Pros

  • Welcomes a broad range of small pocket pets
  • Discounted baseline spay and neuter pricing
  • Independent community presence since 1983
  • Complete on-site diagnostic laboratory and pharmacy

Cons

  • Restricted weekly hours with no late evenings
  • No overnight or on-call emergency medical care

I fully trust their judgment

I have been coming here for about 6 years now with my two cats and dog. The staff is very friendly, helpful, and compassionate. I fully trust their judgment and find the prices reasonable. I appreciate how they can always get me in quickly when i have an urgent situation.

I am certain our dog is in good hands

Never a disappointment when we come see Dr. McDonnell and staff. We have been going to this clinic since our dog was a puppy. They are always providing excellent service and I am certain our dog is in good hands. Could not ask for a better team.

5. Birchwood Animal Hospital

birchwood-animal-hospital

Website:https://birchwoodvet.com/

Address: 2595 Portage Avenue

Contact: 204-832-1368 | [email protected]

Hours: Monday to Thursday: 7:30 AM – 8:00 PM; Friday: 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM; Saturday: 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM

Bringing an anxious, trembling dog into a clinic can break your heart, which is why gentle handling by a pro is such a relief. Birchwood Animal Hospital has cared for pets since 1959 as an independent practice using stress-free, fear-free handling methods.

During my recent visit to the clinic with my incredibly nervous pup, the gentle techniques used by their staff made an immediate, noticeable difference.

They also maintain high-tech surgical safety by assigning a dedicated registered veterinary technologist (RVT) solely to monitor anesthesia vitals.

Just keep in mind that because they manage a huge patient load, they face frequent booking bottlenecks that require scheduling non-urgent wellness exams several weeks in advance. They also lack a 24-hour emergency unit for late-night crises.

Pros

  • Specialized training in fear-free pet handling
  • Dedicated technologist tracking anesthesia vitals
  • Extended weekday hours from morning to evening
  • Upfront written cost estimates provided clearly

Cons

  • Long booking backlogs for non-urgent visits
  • No round-the-clock emergency trauma unit
