Luckily, Winnipeg has no shortage of amazing spots to fix those cravings. Behold—here are my top-secret (well, not anymore) dim sum places you should hit up right now!

Must-Order: Boiled Three Delicacies Dumplings

Asia Palace serves Chinese, Vietnamese, and Thai-influenced food in a chic, modern space. Here, I can just sit back and relax while the dim sum baskets and plates roll in.

My go-to is their Boiled Three Delicacies Dumplings, packed with shrimp, pork, and chives. Meanwhile, vegetarians should definitely try their Boiled Chive and Egg Dumplings—they’re light, tasty, and come in both boiled and fried versions.

If spring rolls are more your thing, they offer a wide range, but a crowd favorite is their BBQ Pork Vermicelli Spring Roll. This masterpiece combines smoky, savory pork with that signature spring roll crunch—yum!

Choosing from their range of milk teas is the perfect way to end your meal. All of them are sweet and refreshing—almost like having a drink and dessert in one.

Kum Koon Garden is a Chinatown institution that has been serving more than 250 authentic dishes for over 30 years. I love the space itself—the elegant Chinese paintings and golden dragon bas-reliefs help set the tone for your meal.

Their dim sum menu is very impressive, with both steamed and fried dumplings to choose from. My personal favorite is the Pan-Fried Pork Dumpling—golden, crispy, and packed with flavor, and every bite comes with a very satisfying crunch.

They also have unique options you won’t always see elsewhere, such as Pork and Peanut Dumplings, Curry Squid, and Cilantro Shrimp Dumplings.

And make sure to try their mango pudding for dessert. Soft, honeyed, and draped in condensed milk, it’s like a sweet little cloud that melts on your tongue.

Pro Tip:

If you’re planning to drop by Kum Koon Garden on a Sunday morning, be prepared to wait. Even though they have more than 600 seats, they tend to fill up fast, so either come early or bring some patience along with your dim sum cravings.

Every guest is welcomed with a fresh pot of tea. And if you ask me, nothing pairs better with tea than their Signature Hargrow Dumpling—perfectly steamed shrimp dumplings wrapped in half-transparent skin.

For dessert, their Pineapple Buns are a huge hit—it has a crispy golden topping and a custard filling that’s sweet and creamy. It’s so addicting, I guarantee you’d want to order a takeout bag to enjoy later.

If you’re planning a big gathering, feel free to book their banquet. But make sure to do it well in advance since they’re pretty popular, especially during holidays.

Must-Order: Fried Peking Perogies

New Hong Kong is a cash-only, hole-in-the-wall that has been serving the best Chinese snacks in Winnipeg for over 50 years.

One dish I always recommend here is their Fried Peking Perogies—you get eight golden, crispy pieces that are just the right balance of savory and satisfying. Their Onion Crepes and Shrimp Spring Rolls are also crowd pleasers.

A nice perk is that you can call in advance with your order, and they’ll start making it so it’s ready when you arrive.

However, the best part for me is their friendly atmosphere—the owner has an incredible way of remembering faces, even if it’s been years since your last visit. Honestly, it’s one of the few spots I’ll happily drive across the city for.

Pro Tip:

New Hong Kong’s washroom is not wheelchair accessible since it’s down a set of stairs and crammed with pipes.

Must-Order: Wonton Soup

Sure, Ding Ho Restaurant is located in a less-than-glamorous part of Winnipeg. But don’t judge a book by its cover—their delicious Chinese and Vietnamese dishes have been winning over locals for years and years.

Their menu is massive, with over 100 items to choose from. My fave is their Wonton Soup, which is hands down the best I’ve ever tasted. Its serving portion is insanely gigantic, about double or triple what you’d get elsewhere.

They serve old marinated Pork Hock, too—a traditional Chinese dim sum dish that’s rich and deeply comforting. Once you try it, you’ll always be craving it later, trust me.

I also like unwinding here after work, since it has a selection of beer and wine. I mean, everyone knows pairing an ice-cold beer with a table full of dim sum is pure genius!

Pro Tip:

If you’re skipping alcohol at Ding Ho, don’t worry. Their homemade iced tea, lemonade, and Vietnamese coffee with milk are all excellent picks, too.

For over 50 years, Double Greeting Chinese Snack House has been a beloved Winnipeg favorite, serving comforting dishes that feel like a warm hug.

If you’re a spice lover like me, try their Wonton Soup with Chili Oil, and you’ll never look back! For a small fee, you can add other types of dim sum, too, like shrimp dumplings, fish balls, beef balls, and rolls.

To balance out savory bites, I suggest choosing from one of their sparkling fruit sodas. Their flavors include honeydew, lychee, mango, passion fruit, wintermelon, and more.

Just keep in mind that this is a cash-only establishment, so make sure you’ve got some bills on hand before you stop by.

Pro Tip:

For dessert, I recommend Double Greeting’s famous Chinese doughnut, made in-house. Just be sure to visit early since they sell out crazy fast!

Must-Order: Vegetarian Spring Roll

North Garden Restaurant is the kind of no-frills Chinese eatery that wins you over with its amazing and affordable food. Specializing in Cantonese dim sum, it’s a favorite among students and families.

I’m not exaggerating here, but I could eat their delicious Vegetarian Spring Rolls all day—they’re so crispy yet not greasy at all, which is perfect. As for the classics, you can’t go wrong with their Shiu Mai and Har Gow, which are steamed fresh per order.

They also sell Chinese pastries and frozen dim sum if you want to stock up your freezer for late-night cravings.

The space itself is relaxed, so no need to dress up. You can choose whether you’d like booth seating or a private dining room (great for special events or for fun group drinking sessions).

Pro Tip:

North Garden’s parking can be pretty tight and sometimes, a little disorganized. If you can, plan to arrive a bit earlier to snag a spot without the stress.

Must-Order: Soup Dumplings

Hai Shang Restaurant is a go-to spot in Pembina for authentic Chinese flavors. Their dinner menu alone boasts 212 items, which means you’ll never run out of things to try.

One of my absolute favorites here is their fresh and juicy Shanghai-style Soup Dumplings. You should definitely drizzle chili oil on them to kick the flavors up a notch—thank me later!

If you’re planning to order dumplings, call ahead about 20 minutes before you visit. That way, they’ll have your order started by the time you arrive.

And to cap off your hearty meal, they often surprise guests with coconut milk and tapioca, served as a complimentary dessert.

Pro Tip:

You should make reservations at Hai Shang Restaurant in advance if you’re heading there with a big group. That’s because they have limited seating during peak times, so you’d want to plan ahead.

Sun Fortune Restaurant feels like a slice of Chinatown tucked into South Winnipeg. They’re experts in Hong Kong-style cuisine, with a menu of over 300 items.

A must-try dish is their Shanghai Steamed Dumplings or Xiao Long Bao—they’re delicate, juicy, and downright addictive. A close second is their Spring Roll, which at $2.95 each, is a crispy, golden bargain.

They have a Hong Kong-style milk tea that has a creamy and slightly bold flavor. But you can always stick with traditional Chinese tea if you prefer something lighter.

Reservations here are a must, especially if you’re going with a large group. Believe me, since it’s so popular, you’d want a guaranteed seat when you arrive.

Pro Tip:

Ordering takeout at Sun Fortune? Spend over $88 and pay with cash or debit to score 5% off your bill—the perfect excuse to grab extra baskets of dumplings!

Must-Order: Pork and Chive Dumplings

Located in Chinatown, Dim Sum Garden has been a staple of Winnipeg’s dim sum scene for over 20 years. Known for its Chinese and Hong Kong-style cuisine, this spot is popular with longtime locals for a reason.

I love that the dim sum here is made to order, although that means a slightly longer wait time. My favorite is their Pork and Chive Dumplings, which are steamed and quickly placed on a grill for a little extra flavor and texture.

If you want an extra kick, just ask your server to add a dash of gip-jap (Worcestershire sauce) or chili oil on top.

They also offer an all-you-can-eat dim sum option for under $20. This is a fun way to try a little bit of everything without holding back—you’ll definitely leave full and happy!

Pro Tip:

I suggest swinging by Dim Sum Garden during Happy Hour, held on Tuesdays to Fridays, from 4:30 PM to closing. You can score affordable and delicious favorites like Shark Fin Dim Sum and Pineapple Custard Buns.

Must-Order: Pork and Shrimp Dumplings

Tang Dynasty Restaurant is a family-owned gem that has earned a rep for serving some of the best dim sum south of the city—freshly made to order. On top of that, their portions are generous, and their prices are more than fair.

Browse through their wide selection of dim sum, which has something for everyone. We’re talking sweet and savory options like siu mai, tripe chicken feet, noodles, shrimp dumplings, sesame balls, buns, and lots more.

While everything here is solid, I never skip their Pork and Shrimp Dumplings. They’ve got a clean, fresh taste, plus they’re stuffed so generously, you know you’re getting your money’s worth (and then some!).

And since this place is tucked into a shopping center, you’ll never stress about parking. You also have the option to shop or run some errands before or after your meal.

Pro Tip:

On weekends, Tang Dynasty gets packed up insanely fast (sometimes with lines out the door!). Showing up right at opening (11 AM) is your best bet to beat the rush.

P.F. Chang’s menu pulls inspiration from all over Asia—Chinese, Thai, Japanese, Korean, and even Mongolian dishes. Their mission is to share good food with friends, which makes it perfect for special gatherings.

I love that everything here is made from scratch daily, and a great example is their handmade Pork Dumplings (six per order). You can get them pan-fried or steamed, and they also come with a drizzle of light chili sauce that’s both savory and spicy.

Try their Family Meal for 6 if you’re ordering takeout or delivery with a group. You get to build your own combo by choosing apps, dim sum options, and mains.
