1. Bissett Jiu-Jitsu Winnipeg

bissett-jiu-jitsu-winnipeg

Website: bissettjiujitsu.com
Address: 513 Hamilton Ave
Contact: 1 (778) 760-9356 | [email protected]
Hours: Monday to Thursday 5:30PM–9:00PM | Saturday 9:00AM–12:00PM

Stepping onto the mats here feels completely different than in other gyms. That’s because the Bissett curriculum focuses strictly on practical self-defense rather than theoretical concepts.

The instruction goes beyond standard physical movements by integrating military tactical principles to handle realistic altercations.

I spoke with a long-time student who confirmed how deeply the extensive groundwork tactics changed their approach to personal safety.

The facility has built a trusted pedigree since 1978 by training high-stakes professionals and close-protection specialists globally. You’ll be guided by a chief instructor holding multiple high-level ranks, bringing decades of field-tested experience to every class.

Members benefit from a highly engaged community of dedicated practitioners who uphold strict technical standards.

But those looking to participate in modern sporting tournaments will find the curriculum entirely unsuitable for those specific goals. Still, the comprehensive threat response training provides an incredibly thorough education in real-world protection.

Pros

  • Elite instructor with decades of experience
  • Field-tested self-defense techniques
  • Strong and active alumni network
  • Comprehensive threat response preparation

Cons

  • Not suited for sports competitions

Kevin is a 3rd degree black belt and an excellent teacher and trainer of self defense in Winnipeg. It can be a rough and unpredictable city, so women, men and children all should have some basic sort of martial arts training to be able to defend themselves if occasions arise. Sign up for Jiu-Jitsu classes to learn from the best in self defense.

Highly recommended. The techniques are really helpful, classes are fun and the instructor Jen was amazing!

I really enjoyed the course and learned a lot of self-defence techniques. Would definitely register for level 2 soon 😊 …

2. Thrive Academy

Address: 181 Stradbrook Ave
Contact: +1 204-474-0999
Hours: Monday to Thursday 6:15AM–9:15PM | Friday 6:15AM–7:30PM | Saturday 8:45AM–2:00PM

Building mental resilience is the main focus at Thrive Academy. They function as a complete development ecosystem rather than just a standard gym.

The training philosophy relies on core pillars like daring big and adapting quickly to guide the structure of every session.

Parents we spoke to appreciated the early childhood options that introduce movement and discipline to toddlers as young as two and a half. Teens also get a holistic curriculum engineered to teach leadership skills and prepare them for adult challenges.

What we like most is how women have access to a dedicated program tailored specifically to their unique fitness and self-defense goals.

Much like what you would find in swimming lessons, the pristine environment features highly sanitized mats and comfortable social areas for unwinding after a tough workout.

But because the academy identifies strictly as a grappling center, you have to look elsewhere if you want to learn striking disciplines.

The youth classes are also tightly segmented by age, meaning older and younger siblings can’t always practice together.

Pros

  • Pristine and sanitized training space
  • Accessible downtown location
  • Inclusive adult curriculum
  • Early childhood movement programs

Cons

  • Lacks striking-based martial arts
  • Segmented youth age brackets

Customer Reviews

The best decision I have ever done was to start BJJ training at Thrive Academy. Since the 1st day the professionalism , kindness and patience of Aaron and instructors such as Mary , Daniel and Davi made me

feel welcome  into a community where everyone try to support each other to learn BJJ and build self-confidence.

The instructors are incredibly knowledgeable and manage an excellent instructing pedagogy. They really want you to learn and are willing to repeat and guide you as many times as needed.

My experience at Thrive Academy in Winnipeg has been nothing but the best. The gym is always extremely clean and well-maintained, which really shows how much they care about the students and the environment we train in.

All the students and instructors are very respectful, and one thing I truly appreciate is how accepting they are of boundaries—whether they’re religious or personal. I’ve always felt comfortable, respected, and supported here.

Hours: Monday & Wednesday 12:00PM–1:00PM & 4:30PM–8:00PM | Tuesday & Thursday 4:30PM–8:00PM | Friday 12:00PM–1:00PM & 5:00PM–8:00PM | Saturday 10:00AM–1:00PM

Canadian Fighting Center holds the honor of being the first global affiliate of the renowned Roufusport system. The center was established in 2002 to develop competitive fighters and promote local events.

The schedule offers a highly diverse array of classes ranging from children’s groups to comprehensive adult combat disciplines.

Members love the holistic fitness benefits of the striking curriculum, which improves cardiovascular health while acting as a powerful stress reliever.

If you’re serious about improving your physical conditioning, working out here rivals hiring a dedicatedpersonal trainer.

When I visited the facility during a busy evening session, I immediately noticed the strict sanitation protocols and secure atmosphere.

However, you can’t simply drop in for a quick session because the administration strictly requires appointments for all prospective visitors.

Certain beginner programs also implement rigid safety boundaries that completely forbid physical contact between partners.

Pros

  • Strict hygiene and sanitation protocols
  • Secure and safe learning environment
  • Extensive class schedule variety
  • Cardiovascular and motor skill benefits

Cons

  • Walk-in registrations are prohibited
  • Mandatory uniform gear required

Customer Reviews

Amazing gym and lessons! I’ve been going to their kickboxing classes for about a year, and every class is always fun. Even in the kids’ class, they teach in a way that really sticks. The coaches know their stuff, and it’s just a great gym overall!

I’ve been training at CFC for over 4 years now and its hands down the best gym for kickboxing, Muay Thai, and MMA in the city. There’s nowhere better to get a hard work-out. If fighting is your goal, coach Giuseppe and his wealth of knowledge will mold you into a top competitor. Everything is cleaned and sanitized between classes, and the atmosphere is great. Be ready to work hard!

Address: 15-1599 Dugald Rd
Contact: 1 (204) 505-2787 | [email protected]
Hours: Monday to Thursday 1:00PM–9:30PM | Friday 1:00PM–8:30PM | Saturday 9:00AM–4:00PM | Sunday 9:30AM–1:15PM

Engaging children requires creativity, and this academy excels in that end. Innovative Martial Arts & Fitness offers unique summer camps featuring immersive themes like Minecraft to build character.

The overall teaching methodology actively leverages a psychological approach to develop confidence through physical competence.

Their youth programs, for example, are scientifically formulated to match the behavioral milestones of each specific age bracket.

Adults gravitate toward the specialized submission grappling classes that provide a fast-paced, uniform-free environment for practitioners.

You can also take advantage of an integrated yoga program designed to complement the heavy physical toll of intense grappling sessions.

Female beginners here can have access to an exclusive introductory self-defense course that ensures a highly supportive entry point.

On the downside, this facility restricts its training schedule by closing on Sundays, limiting weekend availability for busy professionals. The deliberate focus on uniform-free grappling also means classical practitioners will miss out on traditional techniques.

Pros

  • Integrated yoga classes available
  • Flexible rolling membership policies
  • Exclusive women-only introductory course
  • Early start classes for toddlers

Cons

  • Closed for training on Sundays
  • Strict focus on uniform-free grappling

Customer Reviews

My 6 year old son was nervous but the staff and instructors made him feel welcomed for his first class. Very impressed with the kindness and patience the instructors had with him! Amelia was wonderful! We signed up right after and can’t wait to go again. Thank you, Innovative Martial Arts & Fitness!

Our daughter has been going for 6 years of jujitsu and 2 years of kick boxing. Our son 2 years of jujitsu and just started kick boxing. The program and teachers are amazing. I strongly recommend for pre school aged kids. They engage them, teach movement, discipline, and respect. All while having fun! Andrew and Lindsay have been there from the start and are amazing with the kids. So much care goes into everything they do at this school.

5. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Winnipeg

Hours: Monday to Thursday 5:15PM–8:30PM | Saturday 8:30AM–3:00PM

Authenticity matters when learning ground techniques. That’s why Gracie Jiu-Jitsu guarantees a curriculum straight from the source.

The youth program actively avoids teaching strikes by prioritizing control and negotiation tactics to handle conflicts safely. Advanced students even get a subscription to a streaming video archive to review lessons before testing.

Newcomers appreciate the beginner combatives structure because it focuses entirely on safe lessons without the pressure of live sparring.

The studio removes all physical prerequisites, making the mats welcoming and accessible to everyone regardless of athletic background. You even receive a free uniform to wear during your very first introductory session.

The ten-day trial must be used on consecutive days, though, which can make it difficult for busy parents to maximize the offer. The training area also has a capped amount of space, which sometimes leads to waitlists during peak hours.

Pros

  • Risk-free introductory trial offer
  • Beginner-friendly class standards
  • Free uniform for new students
  • Safe environment without live sparring

Cons

  • Rigid consecutive-day trial structure
  • Limited facility space capacity

Customer Reviews

They provide a great 10 day free trial period. And even in my first session, they made me feel included. Everything seemed to be easy to learn as they give you special attention because you’re new. Though you’re practising very effective techniques, you feel safe practising doing it on the other person as it is a very controlled and safe environment. You’re always accompanied by a supervisor who is looking over you if not training you themselves. It was a great experience joining Gracie jiu jitsu.

We decided to put our 7-year-old daughter into jiu-jitsu mainly to help build her confidence. She was hesitant at first, but since they offered a 10-day trial, we thought we’d give it a try. We honestly didn’t know if she would like it, and she was nervous and scared to go, but she ended up loving it!
