12 Best Steakhouses in Winnipeg When You’re Craving the Real Deal

Is there anything more satisfying than cutting into a juicy, perfectly cooked steak? Imagine that rich, smoky aroma, that melt-in-your-mouth bite, maybe a drizzle of peppercorn, and a side of buttery mashed potatoes.

Sadly, not every steakhouse nails it; in fact, some might leave you downright disappointed. Well, it’s a good thing you have me.

I’m a Winnipeg local who knows the difference between a “meh” type of grillhouse and a premium meat paradise. In the search for the top spots around, I’ve definitely had my share of overdone steak and salty sides.

So, knock yourself out: here are the best Winnipeg steakhouses that’ll win you over from the very first bite.

Must-Order: JOEY Classic Steak

JOEY Kenaston is part of a Canadian group with over 20 locations across the country. What I love about this chain is that every location has a different vibe.

Their JOEY Classic Steak is a fan favorite for a reason—a tender 6 oz sirloin paired with their famous fully loaded crispy mashed potatoes and seasonal veggies. You can add $21 and upgrade it to a buttery filet mignon.

If I’m feeling bougie, I go here on Tuesdays. I treat myself to Steak Frites for lunch and enjoy up to 50% off bottles of wine—the perfect midweek pick-me-up, if you ask me.

And if wine’s not your thing, visit during Happy Hour instead. Head to the lounge, bar, or patio from 3 to 6 PM daily and pair your steak with one of their delicious cocktails.

Pro Tip:

Keep an eye out for JOEY’s awesome online promos. One is if you buy a $100 gift card, you score a $20 bonus!

Must-Order: New York Steak

Housed in a stunning historic mansion, 529 Wellington Steakhouse is one of the best fine dining spots in Winnipeg

Their menu centers around Certified Canadian Prime Beef, and every cut is handled with care. I usually go for the 10 oz New York Steak, classically seared with that rich, beefy flavor and melt-in-your-mouth tenderness.

Of course, no steak is complete without the right sides. You can choose from creamed mashed potatoes, Kennebec fries, or sweet potato fries with chili aioli (my favorite, btw).

When the weather’s nice, nothing beats dining on their Terrace. Sitting there with a glass of red, a medium rare steak, and a light breeze off the river—that’s a little slice of Winnipeg heaven right there.

Pro Tip:

Don’t miss their Prime Rib Sundays, where you can enjoy their slow-roasted, marbled prime rib (English or Canadian cut). It comes with cabernet jus, Yorkshire pudding, mashed potatoes, and asparagus.

Must-Order: Prime Rib

George Tidball opened The Keg Steakhouse + Bar in 1971 with one mission: to serve great food and good times. And I think they absolutely nailed it.

Their steaks are always fresh—aged for tenderness and flavor, and grilled just the way you like them. They also use their signature Keg steak spice for added oomph.

My go-to order here is their Prime Rib, which is slow-roasted and served with horseradish and red wine herb jus that brings out those rich, meaty notes. Another crowd favorite is their Filet Mignon, wrapped in crispy bacon and cooked to perfection.

And while wine’s always a safe bet, I’m actually obsessed with their Gin Basil Lemonade—a refreshing mix of Tanqueray, gin, lemon, basil, and soda.

Pro Tip:

For an amazing time, hit up Happy Hour, Sunday to Friday, from opening until 5:30 PM, and again from 9 PM to closing. It’s available in the bar, lounge, and patio.

Must-Order: Smoked Rib Eye

Chop Steakhouse & Bar has become a go-to for steak lovers in Winnipeg, which is not surprising. That’s because they offer handcrafted dishes and signature cocktails that you’ll want to sample again and again

Believe me when I say that the steaks here are next level. Each one is seasoned with the signature Old Chicago steak spice and seared in a 1800°F Montague grill, locking in the juices and creating that crave-worthy crust.

I recommend their Smoked Rib Eye—tender, juicy, and packed with smoky flavor. And if you’re with a group, go big with the Butcher Board: a generous spread featuring 13 oz smoked rib eye, an 11 oz center-cut New York, and a 7 oz filet mignon.

For those visiting during Happy Hour, don’t skip their Steak Bites, which you can pair with just about any cocktail.

Pro Tip:

If you’re planning a gift or corporate reward, Chop offers both eGift and physical gift cards, plus bulk and corporate options.

Must-Order: Steak Frites

Earls Kitchen + Bar’s menu is curated by Chef David Wong, who takes inspiration from global flavors. Not only is his food divine, but his charming restaurant is also perfect for both romantic date nights and casual dinners.

For those craving a classic, their Steak Frites is to die for. Who wouldn’t want a chargrilled prime sirloin served with crispy French fries, horseradish cream, and fresh garden greens?

To end your meal on a high note, go for their Bourbon Pecan pie, which complements your steak. It has shaved chocolate, Chantilly cream, and a graham cracker crust.

Share your love for meat with their gift cards, and their promos reward you for being nice. You get a $20 bonus with every $100 gift card, or enjoy up to 20% back on corporate gift purchases over $500.

Must-Order: Superior Dinner

Ichiban (meaning Number One) definitely lives up to its name. This is the place to be for exciting celebrations or group hangs.

You’ll dine at their Teppanyaki Dining Room, where you get a front-row seat to the art of Teppanyaki—an ancient Japanese cooking style. Here, chefs grill your meal right at the table, with a little comedy, knife skills, and fire show for added fun.

Whenever my friend and I go there, we always order their Superior Dinner, which includes filet mignon, shrimp, teriyaki chicken, and scallops—surf and turf, anyone? Watching the chef sear filet mignon right in front of us never gets old.

Every dinner comes with all the extras—miso soup, cucumber salad, chicken livers, Japanese green tea, the works.

Pro Tip:

I recommend ending your meal with their Banana Tempura Dessert—lightly battered and fried until golden, then served warm with ice cream. This will perfectly balance the richness of all that filet mignon.

Must-Order: Dry Aged Bone-in Rib Steak

For more than 70 years, Hy’s Steakhouse and Cocktail Bar has been setting the gold standard for fine dining in Canada. This is definitely where to go if you want to treat yourself in style.

They proudly serve Canada Prime Beef, aged a minimum of 28 days and grilled to perfection. Each steak is hand-selected and cooked to your liking—a pure, time-honored technique that’s made Hy’s a household name for generations.

I go straight for their Dry Aged Bone-in Rib Steak, which is so delicious and beautifully marbled. It has that unmistakable, deep, nutty flavor you only get from proper dry aging.

During their Happy Hour, you get to enjoy 30% off sharing and snacking plates (perfect with a small steak bite or two). You can also get featured cocktails, local draught beer, and crisp wine selections daily from 4 PM to 5:30 PM, and again after 8:30 PM.

Pro Tip:

For the ultimate pairing, order a glass of Walt “Gap’s Crown” Pinot Noir from Sonoma Coast, California (2014). It’s smooth, elegant, and beautifully complements Hy’s juicy, grilled steaks.

Must-Order: Certified Angus Ribeye

Simon’s Steaks is a no-frills Forks Market staple with chefs who truly understand the art of cooking steak—the sear, the seasoning, and the timing.

I’m obsessed with their Certified Angus Ribeye (12 oz); it’s juicy, tender, and topped with their signature chimichurri, which adds that punch of garlicky, herbaceous flavor. You can level it up with their add-ons like Malbec mushrooms and roasted pepper aioli.

If you’re not in the mood for a full steak dinner, try their Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich. It’s loaded with sliced steak, caramelized red onions and peppers, gooey Swiss cheese, and a tangy mayo-mustard combo.

As for groups, their Mixed Grill Platter is a must. Think steak cuts, artisan sausages, onion rings, and house-made sauces—delicious and Instagrammable.

Pro Tip:

After enjoying your steak, I suggest basking in the fun market vibe at The Forks. You could take a stroll around the river or shop for goodies at some of the local vendors.

Must-Order: Ribeye Steak

The Blue Marble Restaurant & Lounge takes the farm-to-table concept seriously. They use locally sourced ingredients and grow their own fresh garnishes in-house with an Urban Cultivator.

A must-put-in-your-mouth-ASAP is their 10 oz Ribeye Steak, grilled just the way you like it. It comes with house-cut fries drizzled in truffle oil, assorted veggies, and a touch of balsamic glaze and lemon yogurt for balance.

You can also take a moment to explore their custom-built wine cellar, which offers over 150 varieties to choose from. I recommend pairing your steak with the Red Rooster Cabernet, a smooth, medium-bodied wine with hints of dark fruit, oak, and spice.

A cool perk is that they offer free validated parking—always a win in the city.

Pro Tip:

The Blue Marble is incredibly popular, so be sure to reserve a few weeks in advance, especially if you’re planning to go on a weekend.

Must-Order: Filet Mignon

Bailey’s Restaurant is located in a gorgeous century-old building—perfect if you’re into that old-world sophistication. Their formal dining rooms upstairs exude vintage elegance, while the main-floor lounge offers a more relaxed yet still upscale vibe.

I’m really impressed with their Filet Mignon; every single time, it’s tender and buttery. You can have it crusted with crushed pepper and finished with a rich demiglace and brandy, or go classic with a sauce Bearnaise.

All entrées are fully loaded—each meal includes the soup of the day, seasonal veggies, potato or rice, and Bailey’s mixed Field Greens. You definitely won’t leave hungry here.

And if you’re torn between steak or seafood, go for one of their Combination Platters, like the Steak and Garlic Prawns sauteed in Bailey’s own garlic butter—yummy!

Pro Tip:

Book them for a special event, and they’ll be happy to open the restaurant during off-hours. Plus, they offer special menus for parties of 20 or more.

Must-Order: T-Bone Steak

As Canada’s oldest steakhouse, Rae & Jerry’s has been around since 1957. No wonder you feel like stepping back in time when you go inside—it evokes the timeless era of steakhouse glamour, complete with plush retro-red leather seats.

Their menu is packed with AAA charcoal-broiled steaks, cooked to perfection the way only true grill masters know how. My personal pick is the T-Bone Steak, which is hearty and bursting with that signature flame-kissed taste.

Other classics include the Filet Mignon, New York Strip, Prime Rib, and Rib Steak.

Each steak meal comes with your choice of chilled tomato juice or homemade soup to start. Then, you get to pick two sides like baked or garlic mashed potatoes, fresh-cut fries, onion salad, or French onion soup.

Pro Tip:

No trip to this retro steak place is complete without one of their legendary martinis. They’re poured generously (1.25 oz) and made with premium spirits.

Carnaval Brazilian BBQ

Must-Order: File de Costela

Carnaval is an authentic Brazilian churrascaria, offering traditional BBQ techniques with fresh, local ingredients.

Here, it’s all about the Rodizio—an all-you-can-eat feast where servers called passadores move from table to table with skewers of perfectly grilled meats. You’ll enjoy seasoned beef, pork, chicken, and Brazilian sausage, carved right at your table.

My ultimate pick here is their File de Costela or ribeye, which is rich and juicy. Each cut is seasoned with the chef’s own blend of dry rubs and sauces.

Ask one of their in-house wine connoisseurs to suggest a pairing from their extensive international wine list. They also offer Manitoba’s first Brazilian wines.

Pro Tip:

For the perfect gift, Carnaval offers exclusive online gift cards from $25 to $500—a great and festive option for birthdays and anniversaries.
