12 Best Sushi Restaurants in Winnipeg Where Every Roll Feels Fancy

When I want to feel fancy but still keep it chill, I head to one of my favorite sushi restaurants.

Nothing beats using chopsticks to grab a bite of buttery bluefin tuna wrapped in rice and nori. Plus that little dab of wasabi and soy sauce? Chef’s kiss!

From bright salmon rolls to colorful shrimp, avocado, and mango creations, sushi definitely looks as gorgeous as it is delicious. And there are even upscale versions that have wagyu and duck, so meat-lovers aren’t left out.

As a self-proclaimed expert, I took it upon myself to compile the top sushi spots in the Peg you seriously need to try. Itadakimasu!

Must-Order: Sexy Salmon

Kuma Sushi is tucked right by the river in Osborne Village. It’s a cute little spot you probably won’t notice unless you’re actually looking for it.

Whenever I’m on a budget, this place is my go-to. Not only do I get top-tier sushi, but their generous portions and fresh quality never disappoint.

My all-time favorite is their Sexy Salmon—and yes, it totally lives up to its name! You get eight scrumptious pieces of deep-fried shrimp, avocado, and roe topped with salmon, fried yams, and honey chili sauce—it can’t get any sexier than that.

If you’re sharing, you can spring for a Kuma Tray. This comes stacked with sushi pizza, California, dynamite, bakudan; basically, a greatest hits platter that would make everyone happy.

Pro Tip:

Kuma Sushi caters to gluten-free diners. They offer specially prepared, delicious gluten-free rolls with separate packaging and even GF soy sauce!

Must-Order: Tuna Bakudan Roll

Sushi Ya is a tiny spot, but that doesn’t make it less charming. I just love its folksy Japanese vibe, complete with soft paper lanterns and bamboo plants—such a lovely setting for a beautiful sushi meal.

As a spicehead, I’m obsessed with their Tuna Bakudan Roll, topped with a satisfying crunch. It sits on a generous bed of red chili powder and comes with a dollop of spicy mayo, so prepare to be burned (in a good way).

I just love pairing this with their complimentary miso soup and edamame, which balance things out perfectly. The soup’s mellow umami flavor and the edamame’s simple saltiness help cool down that spicy kick.

If you’re visiting during the day, don’t miss their value-packed Lunch Special. Their fan-favorite Salmon teriyaki box comes with a California roll, green salad, and soup.

Pro Tip:

Sometimes Sushi Ya operates on a cash-only basis, so come prepared just in case.

Tokyo Sushi

Must-Order: Tokyo Night Roll

Tokyo Sushi is a tiny place known for crispy tempura, hearty miso soup, and, of course, amazingly flavorful sushi.

The menu might look a bit limited at first glance, but what they do offer, they absolutely nail 100%. Each sushi roll is perfectly portioned and not overloaded with rice, so you actually taste the fillings.

Whatever you do, don’t miss the Tokyo Night Roll; avocado, crab, and cream cheese wrapped with smoked salmon and topped with shredded crab—yum!

They also get points for considering gluten-free diners. Their clearly labeled GF menu options and packaging make it a stress-free pick for anyone with dietary restrictions.

Pro Tip:

Wash it all down with your choice of drinks—maybe a crisp House White, a smooth House red, or an ice-cold Asahi. They also offer hot or cold sake (like plum sake) for those who prefer the traditional route.

Must-Order: Avocado Salmon Roll

Yujiro Japanese Restaurant is a sushi and ramen bar that has been a staple in River Heights for over 20 years. Chef Edward Lam’s menu nails that balance of timeless and creative, so it’s no surprise that it’s part of Canada’s 100 Best Restaurants 2025 list.

My personal pick here is their Avocado Salmon Roll, a simple yet elegant combo of creamy avocado and fresh salmon that’s also gluten-free. It’s one of those rolls that proves sushi doesn’t need to be complicated to be amazing.

I recommend pairing it with a cup of Genmaicha (roasted rice tea). The toasted flavor of the tea complements the clean, rich taste of buttery fish.

One of my favorite things here is the open kitchen setup, where you can watch the chefs work their magic while enjoying your sushi plate.

Pro Tip:

If you can’t decide what to order, go for their ultimate sampler—the Deluxe Special. It comes with two apps, four pieces of nigiri, California and BC hand rolls, as well as miso soup and assorted sashimi.

Must-Order: Extreme Volcano

Naru Sushi Japanese Restaurant is a great place to unwind over fresh, affordable sushi—it even has a lovely view of the contemporary Zu building.

As you might have noticed, I’m partial to spicy sushi versions, and it seems I’m not the only one. One of their bestsellers is the Extreme Volcano, which is loaded with flame-seared scallops, avocado, and crab, topped with chili sauce.

To cut through the spice, order a cold Japanese beer—that crisp, light flavor tempers the heat and keeps everything balanced.

Plant-based lovers are covered, too. They have an expansive vegetarian menu, which includes their Frutti Oasis Roll and Asparagus Roll as popular picks.

Pro Tip:

Planning a sushi night with friends? Grab a Basic Lovers Party Tray (or two). It’s got seven rolls—from classics like California and salmon to favorites like dynamite and Philadelphia—enough to feed two to three people easily.

Edokko Japanese Food

Must-Order: Chu Toro Sushi

Edokko Japanese Food is tucked inside an Asian market in Winnipeg’s River Heights area. This is definitely a hidden gem offering authentic Japanese cuisine.

Don’t be fooled by the simple surroundings; the sushi here is next-level—the fish is soft, buttery, and incredibly fresh. I recommend their Chu Toro: dreamy, semi-fatty bluefin tuna sushi that’s both rich and tender.

I love that they’re very inclusive, offering vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options. This means everyone in your group can find something they’ll love.

Just a heads-up—this place can get busy, especially during peak hours. I suggest making a reservation in advance.

Pro Tip:

Before you leave, take a stroll through the market tucked in the back. You’ll find shelves of Japanese goodies like miso paste, nori sheets (if you want to create your own sushi), and imported soy sauces.

Must-Order: Dave’s Super Friday Roll

Sushi Daruma has been a North Kildonan favorite for over a decade. As the oldest sushi shop in the area, they’ve mastered the art of combining traditional Japanese preparation with high-quality ingredients.

Personally, I can’t get enough of Dave’s Super Friday Roll—six amazing pieces of tuna and salmon topped with chopped scallops, sweet shrimp, and avocado. It’s the kind of roll that keeps you coming back for “just one more.”

Their Philadelphia Sushi Pizza is another crowd favorite. Picture a crispy tempura sushi rice topped with smoked salmon, cream cheese, and teriyaki sauce, and you might start drooling right then and there.

What’s cool is that they have a separate gluten-free menu packed with yummy options—including GF soy sauce and a whole platter.

Pro Tip:

Try visiting during off-peak hours to skip the wait. This place is located in a strip mall and gets extremely busy fast, especially on weekends.

Must-Order: Lobster Roll

Sushi Ai is led by a chef with over 20 years of experience cooking in some of the finest restaurants in the world. Trust me, you can taste the passion in every bite.

I’m absolutely in love with their Lobster Roll: five pieces of pure heaven with lobster tempura, avocado, drizzled with garlic sauce and masago. It’s crunchy and creamy all at once.

They also offer a wide selection of vegetarian rolls, which is great if you’re dining with friends who don’t eat seafood. Their crowd-pleasers—Avocado Cream Cheese, Sunflower, and Shiitake Mushroom rolls—are fresh and thoughtfully made.

And if you have allergies, don’t worry. Just inform the staff, and they’ll do their best to accommodate you.

Pro Tip:

For those planning a birthday or office party, go big with their Large Tray, which comes loaded with nine regular rolls, one special roll, and a sushi pizza—a total of 78 pieces! You’ll get favorites like Chicken Mango, Spicy Salmon, and Creamy Dynamite.

Must-Order: Volcano Roll

Akindo Sushi Bistro, formerly known as Wasabi Sushi Bistro, has been a go-to for sushi purists and creative lovers alike.

If you ask me, the Volcano Roll is where it’s at—enjoy creamy scallops on top of avocado and unagi, smothered in a spicy, velvety sauce. For those who don’t like the heat, try their Mango Roll, a bright and refreshing crab and mango treat.

Combo options are also available if you’re sharing. A fan fave is their Osborne combo, which includes five pieces of nigiri sushi, plus a California, spider, and dynamite roll.

And don’t skip the add-ons! An additional dab of spicy mango, eel sauce, or extra ginger can totally level up your sushi orders.

Pro Tip:

Since Akindo is right in Osborne village near the river, take a relaxing stroll after your meal—perfect for walking off your well-deserved sushi feast.

Must-Order: Marinated Saba Sushi

Sushi Cushi started back in 2007 at the Winnipeg Baseball Stadium. The menu stays true to its name, packed with sushi (raw fish) and cushi (cooked food).

Try their gluten-free Marinated Saba Sushi, and I swear you’ll be hooked. The mackerel has this rich, slightly smoky flavor with a touch of tang from the marinade—pair it with a bit of wasabi, and you’re golden.

Meat-lovers aren’t left out with their SOS Cow Roll. It comes with seared beef tenderloin, green onion, and a drizzle of balsamic glaze for that perfect umami bite.

For just a couple of bucks, you can wash down your sushi with one of their additive bubble tea options: mango, strawberry, banana, pineapple, or avocado. All of them are equally refreshing.

If you’re not sure what to bring to your next potluck, their Happy Mouth Platter is a sure win. It’s packed with 43 pieces of rolls like Happy Mouth, Dynamite, Teriyaki Chicken, Calamari, and Bakudan—enough for a sushi coma!

Must-Order: The Exchange – Classic Roll

Blufish Japanese Restaurant is a tried-and-true spot in the Peg that serves up some seriously satisfying sushi and Japanese eats in a chill, contemporary setting.

Go straight for The Exchange – Classic Roll, which is a six-piece classic named after the restaurant’s location. It combines cucumber, avocado, and mayo, packed with tuna and salmon; I promise that it’s a melt-in-your-mouth experience.

A good drink pairing is their Lychee Cocktail. It’s sweet and refreshing, like summer in a glass—a perfect complement to your rich sushi.
